weekend project #1

One of my new years resolutions was to start coding little side projects again.

Last weekend i decided to solve an issue that i have ran into every day… Sharing images and screenshots easily (without having to install additional software). So i decided to create a little free service to tackle this issue.

http://img42.com - a basic drag and drop image hosting service (you can also copy/paste)

This is a very fresh project, if you guys have any issues with it please email me chadvscira@gmail.com

why am i in a suit?!

Re: Grouper Questions

I posted a little review last night about a service called grouper and i had quite a few questions about it. First off they are currenly only serving the following places:
  • NEW YORK
  • CHICAGO
  • BOSTON
  • LOS ANGELES
  • MIAMI
  • PHILLY
  • SEATTLE
  • ATLANTA
  • AUSTIN
  • DALLAS
  • WASHINGTON DC
  • SAN FRANCISCO
However they are working on opening up the service to the following (very soon i hear):
  • TORONTO
  • VANCOUVER
  • MONTREAL
  • PHOENIX
  • COLUMBUS
  • SAN DIEGO
  • CHARLOTTE
  • BALTIMORE
  • NASHVILLE
  • DENVER
  • NEW ORLEANS

As for the matching i did state that they only matched groups of girls with groups of guys. It turns out that i was wrong and you can have two groups of girls or two groups of guys meet up with each other :).

Also someone asked me about cost (which i failed to mention before). They do not charge a monthly fee or anything! They only charge each person $20 and this includes a drink. By paying the small fee it ensures that everyone is serious about meeting up (it would suck to have no shows)

Re: Grouper

I heard a few friends from san francisco talking about this grouper thing, and it intrigued me. So the way it works is you get two other friends of the same sex to go out with you to meet three strangers of the opposite sex at a venue selected by grouper and you all get a round of drinks.

After convincing two of my friends to come with me we ended up at the venue awkwardly waiting for a few minutes (we were little nervous because it still felt a little creepy). When they showed up there was a little bit of awkward tension, but shortly after the waitress stepped in and asked what we would be drinking. We plowed through the first round pretty quickly (it was still a little tense). To my surprise we ended up getting a second round. At this point i was enjoying the company, but the venues bar was a bit lacking so we agreed to go to a sports bar one of the girls was talking up.

We walked about 2 blocks and there we were. It was a pretty cool spot that few of us knew about (a total plus). We continued to order some appetizers and another few rounds. All in all we had a pretty good time. I will definitely be doing another grouper.

One of the main things i like about grouper is that its their responsibility to pick the venue and the people (so you can blame them if anything is lacking).

Finally fixed the socialgif bug… Turns out tumblr changed the way their API crawls images.

Racist Moments of 2012, Pt.1 ~The Workplace~

qu33riousity:

In August I worked full time at a start up in San Francisco, a gaming company in the financial District.  For reasons I outline at the end of this recollection, I cannot name the company or use the real names of anyone in the office I discuss.  I can say that ironically, months before working there, I took a picture of one of their (MANY) ads plastered all over the downtown BART stations, as well as in the trains themselves:

Yeah, I worked for that misleading eyesore.  I was offered the job while I was at a coffee shop a few blocks from my new spot in Oakland, maybe not even a week after returning to The Bay from New Orleans.  I was approached by a person who runs a contracting “company,” hiring video game testers to work at various game companies.  Literally, he walked up to me as I was drinking coffee and doing computery things and asked “Excuse, do you play video games?”

He gave me his contact info and walked away. I turned to Li like “was that for real or was he being an uber creep and hitting on me?” At this point I wish it was the latter and nothing more came of it.

sorry about the horrible experience with that company! considering how much press your post has just received, you may actually be able to change the way that whole office functions. (you have the interwebs on your side)

it appears the author removed the article… but since this is the internet

yesterday i went on a date and decided to pick her up in a cab (so that we could both have a few drinks and not have to worry about driving). normally i would have used a standard taxi service but a friend has been bragging about this new ride service called Uber. i researched it a bit and decided it was overpriced initially… but this time i decided to use them because we were a bit late and the cabs here can take up to 30 minutes to come.

i already had their app installed and had an account so all i had to do was open the app and click two buttons and im greeted with the message “your driver is 3 minutes away”, and shorty after that i get a text saying “Hi Chad, your Uber is en route. Gary (4.8 stars) will pick you up in 1 minute”. one minute later a black town car shows up and its Gary, he was well dressed and the car was extremely clean and well air conditioned.

we got to our reservation on time and i went to give him a tip and he says “the tip is included in the fair”. when i opened the app it said it cost $28, which i was surprised about because with a normal cab it would have cost me $21 and a $3 tip so that would be $24… for a few bucks more you get to ride in a damn town car…

i just wanted to share my pleasant experience with tumblr, and hopefully saved you from being in a situation where you cant wait 30 minutes for a cab. they have a promotion going on where if you take one ride with them you get $10 off your first ride: http://bit.ly/SW2b0o (promocode uberdeal10)

edit
i forgot to tell you guys that they also had free chilled water bottles in the car

Is this available all over North America?

They are currently only serving the following cities:

  • atlanta
  • boston
  • chicago
  • dallas
  • denver
  • hamptons
  • london
  • los-angeles
  • napa
  • new-york-city
  • paris
  • philadelphia
  • san-diego
  • san-francisco
  • seattle
  • toronto
  • vancouver
  • washington-dc

Yeah Uber is amazing. I’ve only had great experiences in SF (our guy had gum for us too and was really nice). So if you are in these cities, do it!

omg, i had no idea… we were in need of gum too!

i feel like this is some kind of prank

how can they get to you in 3 minutes?

well when you use the app you can see all the cars around you http://8.mshcdn.com/wp-content/gallery/gadgets-tools-for-city-living/uber-app-screenshot-640.jpg (try it)
