I wrote about uber about a year ago, and i just recently received a tumblr promo code for $20 credit. They almost trippled the amount of places that uber operates in and they also released a new service called uberX which is actually CHEAPER than regular cabs… So far from a customer perspective uber is really the best. (the cabbies may beg to differ)

My friends and I use uber when we go out! They arrive quickly, have always been friendly and the prices are great. The driver the other weekend fully embraced out drunken stupor, let us turn up the music, didn’t mind us jamming out, and was more than friendly when asking “should I pull over?” when we thought one of my friends was going to get sick.  Seriously, one of the best things my friends have discovered.

Sounds like the complete opposite of normal cabs :). A couple of times yellow cab drivers told me that they sometimes refuse to pick up drunk groups of people because they don’t want to deal with it.

    Late Night Project: mock.im

    icodeforlove:

I had the idea yesterday because we needed an easy way to share text between computers without installing any software. (so i made mock.im)

all you have to do is share the URL that the site gives you, and you will be able to chat with the other person/people and share text in realtime.

join my mock session, and give me feedback

thanks for testing it out with me, you guys helped me fix a bunch of issues!

    Coin!

A card that stores all your credit/debit cards. They just released this and its up for preorder, me and my coworkers just ordered :).

These guys do a much better job at explaining it: site

    Coin == Smaller Wallet

And why would I want ANY third party to have that information?? Usually I’m not a Debbie Downer and I’m open to new ideas and sharing info (sure, spy on me, I don’t give a shit), but when it comes to my money- nope.

from what i understand the phone app stores the cards. so they never get transmitted over the internet.

phone companies are in league with the NSA so that doesn’t work.

and the NSA can’t access the credit card companies? you should just stick to cash in that case.

I understand the concept. But what if I lose or get my phone stolen. Battery dies? I get my coin stolen. I’m fucking till I get home. Also I guess you have to charge it and it’s not used worldwide.

    Its far from perfect but

if you lose it, it will wipe itself

if you lose your phone, you may have a 12 hours before it wipes itself

the battery dies after 2 years (no charging)

if you want to use it worldwide you’re S.O.L.

Just an update on my hosting

I switched to Digital Ocean about 9 months ago, and have been pleasantly surprised with the value they provide. I was previously using Amazon EC2, and i thought they were pretty good but the problem was that their smallest instance cost about $43.50 a month ($0.06 an hour), and digital ocean was only charging $5 a month ($0.007 an hour). It took me about 5 minutes to start an instance and ssh into it (on amazon it took me much longer!).

I find myself using an instance per site due to how cheap it is, and if i ever need to test a setup it only takes about 90 seconds to spin up a new instance.

    Pros

    • $10 promo
    • super easy setup
    • additional bandwidth costs $0.02 per GB vs amazons $0.12 per GB
    • instances are cheaper in general
    • all storage is SSD
    • easy to use API (developers.digitalocean.com)
    • active irc support (#DigitalOcean on Freenode)
    • they accept PayPal :)

    Cons
    • all storage is SSD, and they do not let you just scale the storage so if you need 500GB of storage it’s probably not the best solution
    • they don’t let you clone the image locally (so you’re dependent on them)

Heres a $10 promo code so you can try out a small instance for 2 months free.
